Over and over we are told by Hui-Hai that we should keep a non-dwelling mind in order to free ourselves. There should be no judgements, no past, no future, or even thinking. This seems to be no small accomplishment in our present physical form.
For example, can you imagine walking around campus in what might be interpreted as a mindless stupor and getting yourself run over by a campus scooter and then having to explain yourself to the judge? "But your Honor, I was only practicing mindless walking as is it taught in Yoga."
This philosophy seems pretty ethereal and difficult to practice in this era.

Hi Virginia,
For your blog on Hui-Hai, you wrote, "can you imagine walking around campus in what might be interpreted as a mindless stupor and getting yourself run over by a campus scooter and then having to explain yourself to the judge? 'But your Honor, I was only practicing mindless walking as is it taught in Yoga.'"
Your point is a fair one...and yet, there are Zen masters who live in this state of mind Hui-Hai is speaking of, and they don't get run over by scooters. In fact, they're the first ones to hear that somewhere off in the distance, a scooter is coming. What kind of mind do they have?, and how would you communicate it to others if you had such a mind yourself?
I hope you have a wonderful weekend,
Jason
