The Cloud of Unknowing

When I think of praying, the thought of light comes to me, such as a stained glass window of Jesus praying with a light falling on his face and body. In the meditative state in Hinduism, the light is directed to the space between the eyebrow.

By way of contrast, in this essay "The Cloud of Unknowing," the practice is to get into a prayerful state by going into a cloud of darkness and forgetfulness. It says to put a cloud of forgetting over everything that has ever been made. One needs to be completely unaware of himself and his body, and be nowhere in a state of nothingness.

This approach seems to be on the feeling side of prayer rather than that of reason, which may be very effective for some people.

The cloud of unknowing kind of reminds me of the Hindu version of meditation. The clearing of the mind completely and just having an empty mind. It is always very interesting to me to see how similar some of the practices are among different religions.
