John the Evangelist

For some reason or other, I find this collection of statements by John the Evangelist difficult to understand. We study with teachers in order to grasp different ideas, and yet he tells us that we "don't need to have any man teach you; but that spirit teaches you all things, and this is the truth."

This obviously is symbolic, but in searching for the truth it seems helpful to have teachers who have vastly more understanding than we do.

Of course, at the time when John lived there weren't any public schools, so he came by his philosophy in ways we cannot fathom.
